Councilmember Pine Praises Effort to Regulate Monster Homes

“More than 200 concerned residents, many who watched helplessly as monster homes destroyed their neighborhoods, worked with the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA) and other private and public stakeholders to draft legislation that protects the unique communities that define Oahu’s neighborhoods,” said Councilmember Kymberly Marcos Pine. “Few regulations and a lack of enforcement led to the proliferation of monster homes. These are completely different from the multi-generational residences that many residents occupy and maintain, in the spirit of their community. We worked with builders and homeowners to ensure we protected the public from illegal structures while not over-regulating the construction industry. They were satisfied with the bill. It’s time the Mayor stops making excuses. Please, enforce the laws and protect our kid-friendly neighborhoods.”
