September 30, 2016

WHEREAS, communities along the Waianae Coast are plagued by numerous social and economic challenges which contribute to the stigma of having the highest level of poverty, crime and morbidity in the entire state; and

WHEREAS, social programs such as Makana O Ke Akua (“MOKA”) have the power and community support to dissolve and heal the scars of social barriers residents on the West Coast face outside their home base. Makana O Ke Akua is a private, faith-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which provides structured, clean and sober living environments for incarcerated inmates transitioning back into mainstream society. An additional division dedicated to vocational training has helped secure jobs and provide immediate livelihoods for men and women finding their way back into their families as providers; and

WHEREAS, Waianae Coast Community Foundation (“WCCF”) is another nonprofit corporation designed to enhance economic development by bringing about social and cultural awareness to its coastal communities. Its core values focus on health awareness, physical activity such as all-star team sports, afterschool programs, college preparation, family development, and charitable events like Toys for Tots, Hawaii Foodbank to name a few; and

WHEREAS, Makana O Ke Akua and Waianae Coast Community Foundation teamed up by combining their organizations’ community services in an abandoned Courthouse building in Waianae. For four months, community volunteers labored to renovate the structure and transforme it into an awe-inspiring facility. Housed under one roof will be a retail outlet of refurbished hotel furniture, which can also be donated to charities or homeless shelters, as well as WCCF’s community Outreach Center. MOKA and WCCF believe that together they can make a difference and restore hope for families overcoming challenges; NOW, THEREFORE,

The Honolulu City Council of the City and County of Honolulu takes great pride in recognizing and congratulating Makana O Ke Akua and the Waianae Coast Community Foundation on the occasion of its Grand Opening of the new MOKA Shop & Save and Outreach Center located on 97-1784 Farrington Highway, Waianae, Hawaii, and extends its sincere mahalo and aloha to all contributing members and volunteers of Makana O Ke Akua and the Waianae Coast Community Foundation for continued success in all their future endeavors.
