WHEREAS, communities along the Waianae Coast are plagued by numerous social and economic challenges which contribute to the stigma of having the highest level of poverty, crime and morbidity in the entire state; and
WHEREAS, social programs such as Makana O Ke Akua (“MOKA”) have the power and community support to dissolve and heal the scars of social barriers residents on the West Coast face outside their home base. Makana O Ke Akua is a private, faith-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which provides structured, clean and sober living environments for incarcerated inmates transitioning back into mainstream society. An additional division dedicated to vocational training has helped secure jobs and provide immediate livelihoods for men and women finding their way back into their families as providers; and
WHEREAS, Waianae Coast Community Foundation (“WCCF”) is another nonprofit corporation designed to enhance economic development by bringing about social and cultural awareness to its coastal communities. Its core values focus on health awareness, physical activity such as all-star team sports, afterschool programs, college preparation, family development, and charitable events like Toys for Tots, Hawaii Foodbank to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Makana O Ke Akua and Waianae Coast Community Foundation teamed up by combining their organizations’ community services in an abandoned Courthouse building in Waianae. For four months, community volunteers labored to renovate the structure and transforme it into an awe-inspiring facility.
