The state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a runway closure at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on April 2, 2014.
Runway 4R/22L will be closed from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings, weekly, through the end of September, for pavement replacement.
Runway 4R is Honolulu International Airport’s primary nighttime arrival runway. Planes have shifted to runway 8L increasing air traffic above ‘Ewa Beach and Kapolei.
This project has had a significant impact on the quality of life of our families. Councilmember Pine sent a letter to Governor Abercrombie encouraging DOT and its contractor to expedite the project to ensure it is completed well before the end of September by considering partial daytime closures and other available methods of accelerating the project.
DOT was also encouraged to increase communication to keep the public informed, and to increase noise monitoring to ensure planes are not flying too low and are not exceeding established noise limits.
