Title:                         Mākeke Kapolei Intern

Duration:                 Immediate hire – May 31, 2014

Location:                 KapoleiHigh School and Kahiwelo in Makakilo


The Mākeke Kapolei Intern (Market Intern) will support the Mālama Learning Center (MLC) staff in running Mākeke Kapolei, a farmers’ and green market at KapoleiHigh School as well as oversee MLC’s new Mālama Aina Market (MAM). The MAM is a “general store” made up of local products made by local artisans, cultural practitioners and green products. This will introduce the Market Intern to green jobs through helping to conduct a farmers’ and green market and communicating with the community and market vendors.


This position is administered by MLC and made possible by a grant with a limited duration. The Market Intern must be available on Thursdays from 1:00pm– 7:30pm to serve in this position.  In addition, the Market Intern will need to be available for at least two hours on Wednesday or Thursday mornings.  The other work hours are flexible. The Intern will be paid $11 per hour working approximately 12 hours/week. The position has no medical, vacation, sick leave, or other benefits. The Market Assistant will be supervised by the MLC Market Manager.


The Market Intern will:

  • Conduct weekly harvests and packaging of vegetables and herbs at Kahiwelo (located in Makakilo) every Wednesday or Thursday morning
  • Set up, clean up, and take down of Mākeke Kapolei every Thursday
  • Set up and organization, clean-up and take down of Mālama Aina Market
  • Recruit and secure MAM vendors and MK Vendors
  • Promote the MAM via social networking, word-of-mouth, and other techniques
  • Arrange demonstrations by MAM vendors to promote sales
  • Assist in sales at the MLC booth (drinks, plants, etc.) as needed
  • Create displays for the MLC information booth and its products
  • Develop and implement market surveys
  • Organize market supplies used by MLC
  • Take photographs and videos for use in outreach materials
  • Perform other duties as assigned
