State pulled lifeguard funding for Yokohama Bay, Pine mourns loss of young diver

HONOLULU, HAWAI‘I — Honolulu City Councilmember Kym Pine expresses her deepest condolences to the family of 15 year-old Noeau Lima, the teenaged diver recovered this morning at Yokohama Bay.

“The state normally pays the city $676,000 to place lifeguards at Yokohama Bay. But according to lifeguards, the state pulled its funding effective March 18, citing a lack of funds, so no lifeguards were on duty yesterday at the beach as a result. We should never make cuts to public safety,” Pine said.

Councilmember Kym Pine represents residents of District One (ʻEwa, ʻEwa Beach, Kapolei, Honokai Hale, Ko ʻOlina, Nānākuli, Mā‘ili, Wai‘anae, Mākaha, Kea‘au, Mākua) and is chair of the City Council’s Committee on Business Economic Development and Tourism.
