More restriping work is on the way for the H-1 Freeway as the state looks to ease rush hour traffic for Ewa-bound drivers.
One of the worst areas for Ewa-bound drivers is between the Halawa merge and Waikele.
The state is looking at new options while it puts an $82 million solution on hold.
“I hate it. I don’t like traffic over here,” driver Brian Ayala said.
“Horrible,” driver John Whitaker said.
That’s why the state is going forward with a new plan to ease the traffic woes on a large part of the H-1 Freeway.
The Department of Transportation will restripe Ewa-bound lanes from the Halawa merge to the Pearl City/Waimalu exit. That will give drivers a new shoulder lane that they can use only during the commute home. But will it help?
“I think so. It would alleviate traffic,” driver Amanda Wong said.
“Well, I think it’s a good thing. I’m all for it,” Whitaker said.
Earlier this year, the state told KHON2 it would widen the H-1 Freeway between the Pearl City/Waimalu exit and Waipahu, and add a lane.
The DOT is extending that work, widening the H-1 and adding a lane all the way to Waikele. The state has put the night-time zipperlane project on hold as it works on these new alternatives.
The $82 million project was expected to create a zipperlane for Ewa-bound drivers and had been in the works for at least 10 years. The state will not say how much money has already been spent.
“We don’t mind that there’s an extra lane as long as it’s effective. But to me, if we’ve already put in the money for the zipperlane and we can afford the restriping as well as the zipperlane, that would be people’s top priority,” Honolulu City Councilmember Kymberly Pine said.
The state says the widening and restriping work in these areas should be done by the end of next year.
“So whatever solution they can provide us, we just want to make sure that it works,” Pine said.
The DOT would not give KHON2 an exact timeline for the project or tell us if it would involve lane closures.
