H-1 FREEWAY AIRPORT VIADUCT DECK REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS SATURDAY

HONOLULU – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Highways Division, continues its goal of resurfacing and improving the state’s major highway corridors. A $15.6 million project to repair damaged sections of the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct begins this Saturday, April 5, 2014. Approximately 94,000 square feet of concrete deck will be replaced by removing weakened portions using high pressure water blasting and then placing fast-setting concrete to complete the repair. After all repairs are done, a concrete sealer and/or concrete overlay will be applied to preserve and prolong the life of the roadway. Expansion joint repairs and pavement striping will also be done.

“Because the HDOT has many projects ongoing throughout the main urban corridor of Honolulu, our team is staggering project work hours as much as possible in an effort to limit traffic disruptions,” said HDOT Director Glenn Okimoto. “This project will consist primarily of weekend work. As this new project comes online, we are pleased that the H-1 Freeway Rehabilitation project is on-schedule for a July 2014 completion.”

Roadway areas under the Airport Viaduct on Nimitz Highway will be temporary closed for safety reasons while demolition on the deck above is occurring. Please be aware of changing conditions and observe reduced speed limits within project construction areas.

Lane closure information will be distributed to the media, will be available on the HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov, and will be released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter. Please follow us for the latest information.

The H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct Deck Repair project is a federal-aid project funded with 80-percent federal and 20-percent state funds.
