H-1 FREEWAY AIRPORT VIADUCT WORK CONTINUES WESTBOUND THIS WEEKEND

HONOLULU – The state Department of Transportation (DOT) advises Oahu motorists of upcoming westbound lane closures on the H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct as the ongoing Airport Viaduct Project continues with deck repairs.

Two right lanes will be closed on the H-1 Freeway in the westbound direction from the airport Off-Ramp (Exit 16) to the Hickam Off-Ramp (Exit 15B) from 9 p.m., on Friday night, September 19, through midnight Monday morning, September 22. All ramps to and from the airport will remain open.

Right lanes will also be closed on Nimitz Highway in the westbound direction from Friday night, September 19, through midnight Monday morning, September 22, between Aolele Street and Elliott Street as a precaution due to the deck repair work above. Motorists are reminded that although there is no work being done on Nimitz Highway, these closures ensure the safety of motorists as hydro-demolition work is taking place above.

Speed limits will be reduced to 15 mph through the work zone area in order to reduce traffic induced vibrations that may lead to cracking in the newly repaired deck. In addition, this reduced speed ensures the safety of both motorists and construction crews working on the viaduct.

The DOT urges drivers to allow for extra travel time to the airport, and to drive slowly and safely through the work zone area. Lane closure information will be distributed to the media, will be available on the HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov, and will be released through our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter, #hitraffic.

H1 FREEWAY REHAB PROJECT LANE CLOSURES PLANNED THIS WEEKEND

Upcoming work will include light pole removals and installations, electrical conduit relocations and wall demolition and reconstruction.

Weekend Lane Closures

  • Various eastbound ramp closures on Friday night, July 11, through Sunday morning, July 13, from midnight to 8 a.m., nightly, to include the Kalihi Street Off-Ramp (Exit 20A), Kalihi Street On-Ramp, Liliha Street On-Ramp and Pali Highway Off-Ramp (Exit 21A).
  • One right lane will be closed in the westbound direction from the Houghtailing Street Off-Ramp (Exit 20B) to the Gulick Avenue Overpass beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, July 12, continuously until 5 a.m. Monday morning, July 14, for barrier wall demolition and reconstruction. The Likelike Highway Off-Ramp (Exit 20A) will remain open. Two of the three westbound lanes will remain open.

Weekly Lane Closures

  • Full westbound closures and partial eastbound closures will resume from the vicinity of Middle Street to the vicinity of Ward Avenue on Sunday night, July 13, through Friday morning, July 18, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly.

It will be open only from 5 to 9 a.m. on weekdays. At all other hours it will be closed. This schedule will continue through Friday, July 25. If work is completed sooner, the lane closures will be reduced.

Motorists wishing to access the H-1 or H-201 Freeways westbound are advised to use North School Street to the next available on-ramps on Middle Street.

The H1 Freeway Rehab Project from the vicinity of Middle Street to the Vicinity of Ward Aveune is reconstructing one of the oldest sections of the H1 Freeway through the Honolulu corridor that averages up to 200,000 vehicles a day. It will provide a durable, smooth riding surface, upgrade lighting and drainage, install median glare screens, and increase traffic capacity by adding a fourth lane in each direction through widening and restriping. The Hawaii Department of Transportation is cautiously optimistic for substantial project completion by July 31.
